The Vulnerable EP

I’ve selected these songs as a demonstration of vulnerability as a form of empowerment. My freshman year of college I was sexually assaulted; it has taken me three years to fully comprehend this, and it is an ongoing process of coming to terms with the event and moving forward. This EP of a cappella covers is a part of this process for me. Three of the four songs are by women that I look up to; women that make me feel strong, beautiful, and grateful for the other women in my life. The fourth is, of course, The Beach Boys song, “Don’t Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder).” Though this song in itself does not embody the empowerment I am seeking, it is the most important song on the EP. I’ve had a connection to this piece for most of my life: it brings me comfort through the sweet sounding harmonies and the simplicity of the melody. I listened to “Don’t Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)” with my assailant on the night of the assault, and because of this, the comfort of the song was taken from me. This EP is about taking back my comfort and my strength. Reclaiming this song in a vulnerable new light (i.e. the solo voice component of the cover) is my way of moving forward from the assault, and a sort of “fuck you” to my assailant. Letting yourself be vulnerable in a closed off world is revolutionary. This EP is my contribution to the revolution.
